The sister

On a Saturday in April 2017 a silent march took place in Caracas to commemorate those who died in recent struggles. While the army was firing tear-gas Sr Esperanza, 78, approached a soldier of the National Guard: her steps faltered but her words did not. “I know that you must obey orders. But we are all Venezuelans”. In the next scenes of the video covering the whole scene, the soldier placed his hand on her head: that hand emanated force and power, and yet – guided by the older woman’s determination – it seemed capable of great delicacy, almost a caress, as if begging for forgiveness.
