Lay Christians learning from Giuseppe Toniolo
2012-04-27 L’Osservatore Romano
“The
confrontation of diversity and sincere dialogue becomes a growth factor for
justice and peace. This does not eliminate differences, on the contrary it
intensifies dialogue”. This was enclosed in the message sent by Cardinal
Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State, to participants in a seminar onf the
person and works of Giuseppe Toniolo, on the value of the testimony of the
founder of Italian Catholic Social Weeks, rightly considered the precursor to
the Church's social teaching, beginning with Rerum novarum, and from
Quadragesimo anno to Caritas in Veritate. The meeting's slogan
is significant in this regard: “In the school of Giuseppe Toniolo”, organized in
these days coming up to the Beatification of the great Italian economist and
sociologist – which will be celebrated Sunday 29 April, in the Basilica of St
Paul Outside-the-Walls – by five institutions which in some way are rooted in
the teaching of Toniolo, in collaboration with the Pontifical Councils of
Justice and Peace and for the Laity. The theme of the seminar is: “The
commitment and the contribution of the laity within the international community
for a more just, more peaceful and more humane world”.
