God's horizon
We must not stop at a purely human horizon but open ourselves to the horizon of God, to the horizon of faith. Benedict 
addressed this invitation to the large gathering of the faithful in Castel Gandolfo, who were taking part in the customary Marian prayer of the Angelus on Sunday, 5 August. The Pope, drawing inspiration from the day’s liturgy, wanted once again to recall the need to place Jesus at the centre of human life, so as to overcome the anxieties and uncertainties that are born from a merely material conception of life. We must go beyond the desire to satisfy our own – albeit important – material needs, the Pope recalled, because the human horizon cannot and must not bound by the “concerns of eating, of being clothed, of a career”. Rather, it must be open to the dimension of the “food which endures to eternal life”. This is a dimension to be rediscovered on “days that are full of business and problems”, but also in “times of rest and relaxation”, periods in which, on the contrary, it is possible to strengthen our faith “in the One who is the ‘bread of life’”. Benedict XVI then recalled the anniversary of the Dedication to the Virgin of the Basilica of St Mary Major. Before concluding the meeting he addressed special greetings to the various groups of the faithful.
